Eligibility Criteria for the International Ophthalmology Association (ICO)

To be eligible for an International Ophthalmological Society (ICO) scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Required language: English
  • Eligible Countries: All countries around the world
  • Research requirements:
    • Description of previous work in the application area
    • Detailed CV including a detailed list of publications and impact factors.
    • Certification of the current project director
    • Confirmation of the viability of the chosen host university.
    • A detailed explanation of how research should be continued during the fellowship.
    • Sustainability statement, such as confirmation from the current program director that the applicant may return after the fellowship and resume the position.
  • Basic requirements:
    • Minimum 12 months research training.
    • Online application on the ICO website
    • Applications will be accepted for research in the following specialties: Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Retina, Oncology, Uveitis, Dry Eye and Cornea.
    • A copy of the ophthalmology exam that must be successfully passed.
    • Applicants must be fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
    • Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of application.

How do I apply to join the International Ophthalmology Association (ICO)?

  1. You’ll need to create an ICO account if you don’t already have one.
  2. Choose friendship: After specifying your country, the ICO Fellowships you are eligible to join will be displayed.
