South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) work with (TWAS) – the World Institute for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries – to advance science in developing countries through NRF-grants. TWAS PhD The TWAS-NRF PhD scholarship is tenable at a research institution in South Africa for a maximum period of three years. They are awarded to scientists from developing countries. Scholarship Protection
The TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowship will provide recipients with the following benefits:
- Partial cost of study funding (PCS) and this will only Covers tuition fees (R30 000 per year)
- Housing allowance up to R101 196 per year per student.
- NRF will cover the cost of the cheapest economy class return flight. Including visa and/or study permit fees for applicants who receive a doctorate from TWAS-NRF.
Eligibility Criteria for TWAS-NRF PhD Fellowship
To qualify for the TWAS-NRF PhD scholarship, applicants must meet all of the following requirements below:
- Required language: English.
- Eligible Countries: All countries around the world (Outside the EU) Click here for a list of eligible countries.
- Must not be living, studying or working in South Africa in 2022.
- Applicants who have worked or are currently studying for a degree or research in South Africa and have returned to their country of origin. but have been in the country of origin for less than two (2) years no Eligible to apply;
- Must hold a master’s degree in natural sciences.
- A minimum of 65% must be obtained at Master’s level to apply for a PhD scholarship.
- Must be enrolled at a South African public university in 2023 on full time basis and may be based at South African public research institutions. Including Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) Science Council and the National Research Center
- It must have a maximum value of Be 32 years of age by December 31 of the year of application.–
- Evidence of assessment of all foreign qualifications is required. (obtained by a non-South African university) assessed by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) or evidence that the applicant has submitted their qualifications to SAQA for assessment. - Must comply with the visa and immigration laws of the applicant’s home country and South Africa. Applicants will be required to arrange their own visa and/or study permit under the program to study in South Africa. Neither NRF nor TWAS will be responsible for assisting with visa arrangements, however NRF will cover low cost return flights to cheapest and visa and/or study permit fees for NRF-TWAS doctoral applicants.
- Must return to country of origin upon completion of studies. Students who are unable to return to their home country must return an amount to NRF based on the number of years of study support they received.
- Eligible to carry out research under the field of science Engineering and Technology (SET) only, as only these fields of study will be supported under the NRF-TWAS PhD scholarship:
- Not accepting other work during her/his fellowship;
- Provide evidence of official application and/or offer letter from the South African institution, department or laboratory.
- Provide motivation from future doctoral supervisors. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the relevant institution to apply for acceptance and to arrange a supervisor for doctoral studies.
- Provide a certificate of English proficiency (if applicable at the time of application). If not, this must be done before any NRF funds will be issued to the student. and must meet the following requirements of the Academic English Proficiency Test: IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5) or TOEFL iBIT (minimum 20) or Cambridge minimum 58. Information about the IELTS test can be obtained from the British Council in the applicant’s home country. - Present a detailed research project that must be registered and approved by the host institution. and present a letter of recommendation from the prospective host supervisor.
- Provide official transcripts on university letterhead.
- Be financially responsible for traveling family members.

Step 1:
Applying for acceptance at a South African institution
Applicants must contact their South African institution or potential supervisor for a position on the doctoral research training program. For details of recognized HEIs and other public research institutes, click here.
- Applicants must provide an official letter from the host South African institution, department or laboratory. and motivation from a host of applicants Applicants are responsible for contacting the relevant institutions to apply for acceptance. Applicants are also responsible for finding a supervisor for their studies.
- Research projects must be registered and approved by the host institution. (A letter of recommendation from a prospective supervisor must be attached to the application.
- Universities set their own internal application cut-off dates and applicants must adhere to those dates.–
Applying for assessment of foreign qualifications from the South African Qualifications Agency (SAQA).
Applicants must have all foreign qualifications. (obtained from a non-South African university) assessed by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) Evidence that the applicant has at least submitted his/her qualifications for assessment at SAQA must be submitted with the application. Otherwise, the application will be rejected.
